The Heine Slam 2018

The winner is ...

Dr. Johannes Krause from the Faculty of Humanities wins the Heine Slam 2018 with "Cultivation or the influence of Germany's Next Topmodel on our ideas of beauty" and thus recaptures the challenge cup of the faculties from the lawyers! Already in 2015, the Faculty of Philosophy had won at the first ever Heine Slam.

In an exciting duel, Johannes Krause won against Luca Schuster from the Faculty of Medicine. All five slammers convinced with their high-quality scientific contributions. The slams were given a final polish by advice and professional tips from our experienced slammer Jutta Teuwsen (Heine-Slam winner 2015).

Despite seasonal competition with Christmas markets and celebrations, Lecture Hall 3A was delightfully filled with a curious and slam enthusiastic audience. Equipped with eco-friendly fan clapping and "I love Heine Slam" buttons, students and lecturers came rushing out of their courses, accompanied by citizens from the city.

As usual, Nico Hoffmeister moderated the extremely entertaining evening of short scientific presentations in a sharp-tongued and brilliantly funny manner. Paul Baylan (Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) made a very convincing scientific start with his slam on "Party guests, bouncers and liquid crystals". This was followed by last year's Heine Slam winner Laurenz Neumann from the Faculty of Law, who vividly portrayed the challenges of causality during a law degree in his slam "Poison Cocktails at the Disco - A Problem?". Luca Schuster (Medicine), with his contribution "The doctor-patient relationship ... and what household objects have to do with it", charmingly sensitized the audience to the importance and relevance of good communication between patient and doctor, even affecting our lifespan. The School of Business and Economics also sent a slammer to the Heine Slam finals this year, making the 2018 Heine Slam complete once again. Syan Mahmoud enlightened about prohibition in the 21st century and argued for the legalization of cannabis from an economist's perspective. Last but not least, Johannes Krause presented models without makeup and warned against the beauty craze colported by Heidi Klum.

An ear committee was formed for the voting. Also this year, the Rector, Ms. Anja Steinbeck, together with two students, evaluated the volume of the applauding audience. In order to assess the scientific nature of the slams, representatives from the faculties also voted on the quality of the contributions for the first time this year. The final result was then determined from both evaluations.

In the end, there was an exciting duel between Krause and Schuster, which the sociologist won. In a shower of confetti, he received the coveted trophy of the Heine Slam winner 2018. And so this year, the challenge cup goes back to the Faculty of Humanities, which the Dean Professor Rosar received with a beaming smile from former Dean Professor Altenhain of the Faculty of Law. We say congratulations!
